Tallinn – the new digital capital

Tallinn has won the digital development award for the expansion of electronic services and paperless production. UNESCO and Netexplo will present the Estonian capital the international Netexplo Smart Cities 2020 Prize in March 2020 in Paris.

The award is given to progressive cities every year and Tallinn fall within focused attention as being one of the most developed cities in the field of digital services.

According to Tallinn City Secretary Toomas Sepp, the development of digital technology is the right way for Estonia. The main advantage of Tallinn is the availability of digital services for the residents of the country, the spread of electronic office work and the replacement of paper documents. At the moment, Estonian citizens can use any public services online, which significantly saves time and effort, and thus improves the environment.

The ranking is made in ten areas: attractiveness, data, education, smart development, finance, housing, mobility, digital development, carbon neutrality and transport.

Apart from Tallinn, the top 10 cities in terms of digitization include Austin, Medellin, Dakar, Santiago, Espoo, Shenzhen, Surat, Singapore and Vienna.
